Details

This project invites a team of learners to explore how cutting-edge quantum and nanostructure-enhanced sensors — including quantum magnetometers, nanostructured MEMS, and composite optoelectronic systems — can improve navigation performance in autonomous systems. The focus will be on GPS-denied or degraded environments, but with relevance extending to commercial sectors such as driverless vehicles, drones, robotics, and aerospace systems. Students will investigate materials, device architectures, and integration strategies, assess technical feasibility, and propose novel applications that bridge academic advances and real-world innovation.

This collaboration offers students the opportunity to apply foundational knowledge in physics, chemistry, and engineering to real-world challenges at the frontier of technology. Together, we aim to identify how emerging quantum and nanostructure-enhanced sensors can reshape the future of navigation, spanning defense, commercial, and societal applications.

Deliverables

Potential student deliverables:

  • Technical report on integrating nano- and quantum sensors (e.g., quantum gyros, NV magnetometers) into autonomous navigation stacks
  • Simulation results comparing classical vs. nano-/quantum-enhanced inertial sensors (using tools like COMSOL or MATLAB)
  • Prototype design or concept paper for a nanostructure-enhanced low-drift inertial unit or noise-dampened drone chassis
  • Market analysis report identifying emerging trends and commercial opportunities for quantum/nano sensors in navigation
  • Presentation of applications spanning defense, aerospace, automotive, and robotics sectors
  • Educational materials explaining quantum/nano navigation concepts for non-specialist audiences
